Sumnima
Sumnima-Book Review
Sumnima is a captivating novel written by B.P. Koirala, one of Nepal's most renowned literary figures. Originally published in 1964 AD, Sumnima has since become a classic in Nepali literature, cherished for its rich storytelling, vivid imagery, and significant exploration of love, longing, and societal norms.
Sumnima is about the painful complications that arise in a man-woman relationship. The story is about the powerful attraction that exists between a Brahmin boy and an ordinary girl. It deals with the conflict within the boy who wishes to pursue spiritual salvation but is torn between his desire for this woman and his urge for spiritual emancipation. To surmount carnal desires is not possible for an ordinary mortal and the pleasures of the flesh have a place in life. The Brahmin boy is serious about his spiritual goals but succumbs to the charms of a lovely girl.
Sumnima is conscious about her body's desires and she always believed that we need to take care of our body which the author calls”manuwa” as it doesn't last forever. As time passes by, Sumnima urges Somdutta to follow her ideals and beliefs. As Somdutta finds himself deviating from his aim and goal he separates himself from Sumnima and his parents. He goes in search of enlightenment and spends years in a jungle meditating. As Sumnima’s memory always distracted him he started to do hawan by cutting his pieces.
Somdutta tries everything to forget Sumnima but never succeeds. At last, when only bone and skin are left in his body Sumina becomes the one who helps him to regain control of his body.
Somdutta and Puloma(Somdutta’s wife) both were unhappy with the marriage which was only done due to the pressure from their respective parents. They were never satisfied. Somdutta realises that his religious conservatism has led him to a life without happiness and satisfaction. The novella is a clash between two philosophies Spiritualism and Materialism.
The author attempts to persuade the reader that materialism triumphs over the spiritual quest that limits the individual's sensations, emotions, and desires by placing more focus on Sumnima.
Overall Sumnima is an iconic and great story to read. I would rate this book 4.5 points out of 5. I also asked a few of the readers their interpretation of this story and I found out everyone had different interpretations. The author wins here as the clash between materialism and spiritualism still prevails among the readers. Sumina is a must-read for all .
